기린자리의 NGC 2403

우주의 아름다운 섬, NGC 2403은 긴 목을 가진 기린자리 경계면 안쪽에 위치해있습니다. 이 나선은하는 약 천만 광년 떨어져 있으며, 그 크기는 약 5만광년 정도 됩니다. 이 사진에서 거대한 별이 생겨나고 있는 전리수소 영역의 위치를 수소기체가 내놓는 눈에 띄는 붉은 광채가 표시해주고 있습니다. 이 이미지에 따르면 이 은하의 경우 전리수소 영역을 특별히 많이 보유하고 있는 것으로 보입니다. 이 거대한 전리수소 영역들은, 짧고 맹렬한 삶의 마지막에 아주 밝은 초신성으로 폭발하게 될, 뜨겁고 무거운 별들의 집단에 의해서 에너지를 받아 빛나게 됩니다. M81 은하군에 속한 NGC 2403은 많은 별 형성 영역을 가지고 있다는 점에서, 우리 국부은하군에 속해있는 삼각형자리은하, M33과 매우 유사합니다. 이 다채로운 NGC 2403 은하의 초상화 안의 삐죽삐죽한 십자형태의 밝은 별들은 그 전면에 놓여있는 우리은하의 별들입니다.

Explanation: Magnificent island universe NGC 2403 stands within the boundaries of the long-necked constellation Camelopardalis. Some 10 million light-years distant and about 50,000 light-years across, the spiral galaxy also seems to have more than its fair share of giant star forming HII regions, marked by the telltale reddish glow of atomic hydrogen gas. The giant HII regions are energized by clusters of hot, massive stars that explode as bright supernovae at the end of their short and furious lives. A member of the M81 group of galaxies, NGC 2403 closely resembles another galaxy with an abundance of star forming regions that lies within our own local galaxy group, M33 the Triangulum Galaxy.
