운명의 수레바퀴

두 은하의 우연한 충돌이, 우주 규모의 놀라울 정도로 분명한 형태를 빚어냈습니다. 바로 ‘운명의 수레바퀴’입니다. 이 수레바퀴는 은하단의 일원으로 약 5억 광년 떨어져있으며 조각가자리 영역에 있습니다. 이 그룹에 있는 두 작은 은하들이 수레바퀴의 오른쪽(왼쪽 아닐까요?)에 보입니다. 수레바퀴 은하의 테두리는 거대한 고리 구조를 가지고 있습니다. 그 지름은 150,000광년이며, 새롭게 만들어진 극도로 밝고 무거운 별들로 구성되어있습니다. 은하들이 충돌할 때, 서로를 지나쳐 가면서 그들 안에 있는 개개의 별들은 굉장히 드물게 조우합니다. 그렇다 하더라도 은하들의 중력장은 충돌로 인해 심각하게 뒤틀려 일그러집니다. 그래서 이 고리 형태는 작은 침입자가 커다란 은하 하나를 지나가면서 발생한 중력적인 붕괴의 결과입니다. 중력 붕괴의 과정에서 성간가스와 먼지가 압축되고, 호수의 표면을 가로지르는 물결처럼 충격점으로부터 퍼져나가는 별 탄생 파동이 발생합니다. 이 경우에 거대한 은하는 충돌로 인해 바퀴 형태로 바뀌었지만, 본래 우리 은하와 다르지 않은 나선은하였을 것입니다. 그러면, 여기에 영향을 끼친 작은 침입자 은하는 어떻게 된 것일까요?

Explanation: By chance, a collision of two galaxies has created a surprisingly recognizable shape on a cosmic scale, The Cartwheel Galaxy. The Cartwheel is part of a group of galaxies about 500 million light years away in the constellation Sculptor. Two smaller galaxies in the group are visible on the left. The Cartwheel Galaxy's rim is an immense ring-like structure 150,000 light years in diameter composed of newly formed, extremely bright, massive stars. When galaxies collide they pass through each other, their individual stars rarely coming into contact. Still, the galaxies' gravitational fields are seriously distorted by the collision. In fact, the ring-like shape is the result of the gravitational disruption caused by a small intruder galaxy passing through a large one, compressing the interstellar gas and dust and causing a a star formation wave to move out from the impact point like a ripple across the surface of a pond. In this case the large galaxy may have originally been a spiral, not unlike our own Milky Way, transformed into the wheel shape by the collision. But ... what happened to the small intruder galaxy?
