긴 꼬리의 러브조이 혜성과 꼬마 아령 성운

 

태양풍에 의해 뒤흔들리고 구부러진 혜성 러브조이의 이온 꼬리가 2월 20일에 찍은 이 망원경 사진의 시야에 3도 넘게  뻗어져있습니다. 별들이 있는 배경에는 경탄할 만큼 아름다운 파란색 별 페르세우스자리 파이별이 혜성의 꼬리 바로 아래 보이고, 예쁜 행성상 성운 M76이 러브조이의 긴 꼬리 바로 위에 자리를 잡고 있습니다. 보다 밝은 사촌 격인 아령성운 M27을 따라, 꼬마 아령 성운으로 알려진 M76은 녹색 빛을 띠는 혜성의 중심에서부터 단지 보름달 크기인 0.5도 만큼 떨어져 있습니다. 여전히 북반구 하늘에서 반짝이고 있는 이 러브조이 혜성(C/2014 Q2)은 지구로부터 약 10 광분, 1억 9천만 킬로미터 거리에 태양계 안쪽에서 태양계 바깥으로 나가고 있습니다. 그러나 실제로 꼬마 아령성운은 3천 광년 이상의 거리에 있습니다. 지금 카시오페이아자리를 향해 북쪽으로 계속 휩쓸고 가고 있는 러브조이 혜성은 예상보다 더 조금씩 어두워지고 있어,  아직까지도 여전히 작은 망원경으로 볼 수 있는 좋은 대상입니다.

Long Lovejoy and Little Dumbbell

Explanation: Buffeted by the solar wind, Comet Lovejoy's crooked ion tail stretchesover 3 degrees across this telescopic field of view, recorded on February 20. The starry background includes awesome bluish star Phi Perseibelow, and pretty planetary nebula M76 just above Lovejoy's long tail. Also known as the Little Dumbbell Nebula, after its brighter cousin M27 the Dumbbell Nebula, M76 is only a Full Moon's width away from the comet's greenish coma. Still shining in northern hemisphere skies, this Comet Lovejoy (C/2014 Q2) is outbound from the inner solar system some 10 light-minutes or 190 million kilometers from Earth. But the Little Dumbbell actually lies over 3 thousand light-years away. Now sweeping steadily northtoward the constellation Cassiopeia Comet Lovejoy is fading more slowly than predicted and is still a good target for small telescopes
