7월 7일에 뉴 허라이즌 (New Horizons)호가 찍은 이 이미지는 명왕성에서부터 5백만 마일(8백만 킬로미터)떨어진 곳에서 찍은 것으로, 색깔 정보를 더해 완성한 사진입니다. 막 탐사하려는 태양계에서 가장 유명한 천체에 대한 지금까지의 가장 상세한 사진입니다. 사진에는 이미 “고래”라는 별명이 붙어있는, 명왕성의 적도를 따라  가늘고 길게 뻗은 어두운 영역의 끝 부분도 포함되어 있습니다. 오른쪽에 있는 하트모양의 밝은 영역은 대략 1,200마일 (2,000킬로미터)을 가로지르며, 얼어붙은 메탄, 질소, 그리고/또는 일산화탄소의 서리로 덮여 있을 가능성이 있습니다. 뉴 허라이즌 호가 명왕성에 가장 가깝게 근접하여  불과 7,750마일 (12,500킬로미터)떨어진 곳까지 다가가는 대망의 7월 14일에 이 이미지 시야의 중심 근처를 보게 될 것 입니다.

5 Million Miles from Pluto

Explanation: An image snappedon July 7 by the New Horizons spacecraft while just under 5 million miles (8 million kilometers) from Pluto is combined with color datain this most detailed view yet of the Solar System's most famous world about to be explored. The region imaged includes the tip of an elongated dark area along Pluto's equator already dubbed "the whale". A bright heart-shaped region on the right is about 1,200 miles (2,000) kilometers across, possibly covered with a frost of frozen methane, nitrogen, and/or carbon monoxide. The view is centered near the area that will be seen during New Horizons much anticipatedJuly 14 closest approach to a distance of about 7,750 miles (12,500 kilometers).
