먼지로 가득 찬 섬 우주

밝게 빛나는 NGC 253은 우리가 볼 수 있는 밝은 나선은하 중에 하나이며, 또한 먼지가 많은 것 중에 하나이기도 합니다. 일부에선 작은 망원경으로 보이는 모습을 본 따 ‘실버 달러 은하’ 라고 부르기도 하며, 남쪽 별자리인 조각가 자리 안에 있기에 그냥 ‘조각가 자리 은하’라고 부르기도 합니다. 수학자이자 천문학자인 캐롤린 허셜에 의해 1783년 발견된 이 먼지로 가득찬 섬 우주는, 우리로부터 약 천만광년 거리에 있습니다. 7만 광년 정도의 너비를 가진 NGC 253은, 우리은하 국부은하군과 가장 가까운 조각가 자리 은하군에서 크기가 가장 큰 구성원입니다. 이 선명한 컬러사진에서는, 나선 모양의 먼지 줄기와 함께 먼지로 이루어진 덩굴들이 젊은 성단과 별 탄생지역으로 장식된 은하 원반을 감싸고 자라고 있는 것처럼 보입니다. 높은 먼지 함량은 폭발적인 별 탄생을 동반합니다. 그로인해 NGC 253은 폭발적 별 탄생 은하(starburst galaxy)의 자격을 얻었습니다. NGC 253: Dusty Island Universe

Explanation: Shiny NGC 253 is one of the brightest spiral galaxies visible, and also one of the dustiest. Some call it the Silver Dollar Galaxy for its appearance in small telescopes, or just the Sculptor Galaxy for its location within the boundaries of the southern constellation Sculptor. Discovered in 1783 by mathematician and astronomer Caroline Herschel, the dusty island universe lies a mere 10 million light-years away. About 70 thousand light-years across, NGC 253 is the largest member of the Sculptor Group of Galaxies, the nearest to our own Local Group of Galaxies. In addition to its spiral dust lanes, tendrils of dust seem to be rising from a galactic disk laced with young star clusters and star forming regions in this sharp color image. The high dust content accompanies frantic star formation, earning NGC 253 the designation of a starburst galaxy. NGC 253 is also known to be a strong source of high-energy x-rays and gamma rays, likely due to massive black holes near the galaxy's center.
