말발굽처럼 휘어진 강물 위의 황도 하늘

수평선 중앙으로부터 위쪽으로 뻗어나가는, 흰 빛의 특이한 광선은 무엇이 만들어내는 걸까요? 바로 태양의 궤도를 돌고 있는 먼지입니다. 매년 특정한 시기가 되면, 태양빛을 반사하는 태양계 안쪽의 먼지 띠가, 해뜨기 바로 전에 두드러져 보입니다. 이것은 황도광이라 불립니다. 먼지는 주로 희미한 목성족 혜성에 기인하며, 이 먼지들은 서서히 태양을 향해 나선형으로 돌아들어가고 있습니다. 황도광 앞 사진에 담긴 것은, 콜로나도 강의 말발굽 모양으로 휜 지역입니다. 시리우스를 포함한 밝은 별들과, 플레이아데스를 포함한 몇몇 푸른 성단들, 그리고 오리온자리의 버나드 루프를 포함한 붉은 성운들이 황도광 뒤쪽에서 빛을 발하고 있습니다. 이 이미지를 합성하는데 사용된 사진 30은, 거의 완벽한 암흑 속, 위험한 암벽 가장자리 불과 6인치 앞에서, 이달 초에 촬영된 것입니다.

Explanation: What's causing the unusual ray of white light extending upward from the central horizon? Dust orbiting the Sun. At certain times of the year, a band of sun-reflecting dust from the inner Solar System rises prominently before sunrise and is called zodiacal light. The dust originates mostly from faint Jupiter-family comets and slowly spirals into the Sun. Pictured, in front of the zodiacal light, is a spectacular view of Horseshoe Bend of the Colorado River. Emitted from well behind the zodiacal light is a spectacular sky that includes many bright stars including Sirius, several blue star clusters including the Pleiades, and an assortment of red nebulas including Barnard's Loop in Orion. The 30-image composite was taken earlier this month in nearly complete darkness only six inches from the edge of a dangerous cliff.
