항성풍과 복사 에너지에 의해 만들어진 이 별 공장은 메시에 17(Messier 17)로 알려져 있으며, 이는 성운으로 풍부한 궁수자리 방향으로 약 5,500광년 떨어져 위치합니다. 이 거리를 고려하면, 이 사진은 1/3도에 해당하는 시야를 담고 있으며 그 폭이 거의 30광년 이상에 해당합니다. 선명한 빛깔의 이 합성 사진은 우리은하 중앙의 별들을 배경으로 이 지역의 가스와 먼지 구름의 흐릿하고 세밀한 모습이 대조적으로 잘 드러나 있습니다. M17에서 형성된 뜨겁고 무거운 별들로부터 쏟아져 나오는 항성풍과 강력한 빛이 항성 간 공간에 남아있는 물질, 우주의 가스와 먼지들을 천천히 깎아내며 동굴과 같은 모습과 굽이치는 파도모양을 형성합니다. M17은 또한 오메가 성운(Omega Nebula)이나 백조성운(Swan Nebula)으로도 알려져 있습니다.

Explanation: Sculpted by  stellar winds and radiation, the star factory known as  Messier 17  lies some 5,500 light-years away in the nebula-rich constellation  Sagittarius. At that distance, this 1/3 degree wide field of view spans over 30 light-years. The sharp composite, color image, highlights faint details of the region's gas and dust clouds against a backdrop of central  Milky Way  stars. Stellar winds and energetic light from hot, massive stars formed from M17 stock of cosmic gas and dust have slowly carved away at the remaining interstellar material producing the cavernous appearance and  undulating  shapes. M17 is also  known as the Omega Nebula or the Swan Nebula.
