껍질을 날려버리고 있는 무거운 별, G79.29+0.46

이처럼 변덕스러운 별은 흔치 않습니다. 먼지 구름의 한가운데에 있으며, 사진 중앙의 오른쪽 상단에 위치한 무거운 별 G79.29+0.46은, 우리 은하 내에 100개도 있지 않는 밝은 청색 변광성(Luminous Blue, Variable, LBV) 중에 하나입니다. LBV들은 100년 이상 가스 껍질을 뿜어내면서 목성 정도의 질량을 잃어버리기도 합니다. 밝고 푸르게 빛나는 이 별은 먼지 속에 가려져 있으며, 가시광선으로는 볼 수 없습니다. 이 사진에서 이 죽어가는 둘러싸인 붉은 껌질 안에 초록색으로 보이지만, 이 색은 가상으로 입혀진 것입니다. 이 사진은 NASA의 스피처 우주 망원경(Spitzer Space Observatory)와 광시야 적외선 탐사 망원경(Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer)에서 얻어진 적외선 이미지를 합성하여 만든 것입니다. G79.29+0.46은 우리 은하 안의 Cygnus-X 별 탄생 지역 내에 위치해있습니다. 왜 G79.29+0.46이 이렇게 변덕스러운지, 얼마나 오랫동안 LBV상태에 머물 것인지, 그리고 언제 초신성으로 폭발할지는 아직 아무도 모릅니다.

Massive Shell-Expelling Star G79.29+0.46

Explanation: Stars this volatile are quite rare. Captured in the midst of dust clouds and visible to the right and above center is massive G79.29+0.46, one of less than 100 luminous blue variable stars (LBVs) currently known in our Galaxy. LBVs expel shells of gas and may lose even the mass of Jupiter over 100 years. The star, itself bright and blue, is shrouded in dust and so not seen in visible light. The dying star appears green and surrounded by red shells, though, in this mapped-color infrared picturecombining images from NASA's Spitzer Space Observatory and NASA's Wide-Field Infrared Survey Explorer. G79.29+0.46 is located in the star-forming Cygnus X region of our Galaxy. Why G79.29+0.46 is so volatile, how long it will remain in the LBV phase, and when it will explode in a supernova is not known.
