Curiosity Self-Portrait Panorama

Explanation: This remarkable self-portrait of NASA's Mars Curiosity Rover includes a sweeping panoramic view of its current location in the Yellowknife Bay region of the Red Planet's Gale Crater. The rover's flat, rocky perch, known as "John Klein", served as the site for Curiosity's first rock drilling activity. At the foot of the proud looking rover, a shallow drill test hole and a sample collection hole are 1.6 centimeters in diameter. The impressive mosaic was constructed using frames from the rover's Mars Hand Lens Imager (MAHLI) and Mastcam. Used to take in the panoramic landscape frames, the Mastcam is standing high above the rover's deck. But MAHLI, intended for close-up work, is mounted at the end of the rover's robotic arm. The MAHLI frames used to create Curiosity's self-portrait exclude sections that show the arm itself and so MAHLI and the robotic arm are not seen. NASA의 화성 탐사선 로버인 큐리어시티의 이 놀랄만한 자화상이, ‘돌풍 분화구’ 옐로 나이프만 지역의 광범위한 경관을 담은 이 파노라마에 포함돼 있다. 붉은 행성 표면에서 로버의 현 위치가 바로 여기입니다. 로버가 한 마리 새가 돼서 상큼하게 올라앉아 있는 이 평평한 암반을 흔히들 “존 클라인”이라는 애칭으로 부른다. 존 클라인이, 큐리어시티가 벌인 바위 뚫기의 첫 번째 장소가 되었다. 자랑스러운 모습으로 시야를 조망하는 로버의 발치에서 두 개의 구멍을 볼 수 있다. 하나는 시범적으로 뚫어본 것이고, 다른 하나는 샘플을 조금 채취하기 위한 것으로 각각 직경이 1.6cm짜리다. 인상적인 이 모자이크는, 로버의 ‘화성 손 렌즈 영상장비’ MAHLI와 ‘마스트카메라’ Mastcam으로 찍은 사진들을 이어 붙여 만든 것이다. 풍경을 파노라마로 촬영하기 위하여 마스트캠은 로버 갑판에서 높이 설치해 놓았다. 그러나 근접 촬영용으로 만들어진 MAHLI는 로버의 로봇 팔 끝에 붙여 놓았다. 큐리어시티가 자화상을 촬영하는데 사용한 MAHLI의 사진에는 팔 부분은 제외돼 있다. 그래서 MAHLI와 로봇 팔은 이 사진에 보이지 않는다. 극적인 상호작용이 빚어낸 큐리어시티의 자화상 파노라마를 확인해보세요.
