Sweeping Through Southern Skies

Explanation: For now, Comet Lemmon (C/2012 F6), and Comet PanSTARRS (C/2011 L4) are sweeping through southern skies. Lemmon's lime green coma and thin tail are near the left edge of this telephoto scene, a single frame from a timelapse video (vimeo here) recorded on February 12, tracking its motion against the background stars. Comet Lemmon's path brought it close to the line-of-sight to prominent southern sky treasures the Small Magellanic Cloud and globular cluster 47 Tucanae (right). Sporting a broader, whitish tail, Comet PanSTARRS appears in later video frames moving through the faint constellation Microscopium. Visible in binoculars and small telescopes, both comets are getting brighter and headed toward northern skies in coming months.

NYSC: 남천을 휩쓰는 중

현재 혜성 레몬 Lemmon C/2012 F6a과 혜성 판스타스 PanSTARRS C/2011 L4가 남반구의 하늘을 휩쓰는 중이다. 레몬 혜성의 녹색 코마와 엷은 꼬리 부분이 망원경으로 찍은 이 사진의 왼쪽 가장자리 가까이에 선명하게 보인다. 단일 장면의 이 사진은, 실은 2월 12일 별들을 배경으로 혜성이 움직이는 모습을 추적한 비디오 자료에서 만든 것이다. 레몬혜성의 궤도가 레몬을 남천의 보석이라고 잘 알려진 소마젤란성운과 사진 오른쪽에 보이는 구상성단 47 큰부리새자리 근처로 데려다 놓는 중이다. 넓은 폭의 희끄무레한 색을 띈 꼬리를 달고서 혜성 PanSTARRS가 흐릿한 현미경자리를 지나는 모습이 나중에 찍은 비디오 장면에 나타난다. 현재 쌍안경이나 작은 망원경으로도 볼 수 있지만, 앞으로 몇 달 동안 두 혜성 다 북쪽하늘로 옮겨 가면서 점점 더 밝아질 것이다.
