피뇬 소나무에 장식된 별들

이 피뇬 소나무 위에 아름답게 빛나는 장식품들은 사실은 전갈자리에 있는 밝은 별들과 은하수의 중심에서 내고 있는 희미한 빛이다. 행성 지구의 그랜드 캐니언의 북쪽 끝에서 지난 6월에 촬영된 얕은 근초점 이미지에 나뭇가지 끝에 솔바늘은 선명하게 나타나있다. 하지만 멀리 있는 별빛은 흐릿하게 보이면서, 매우 다채로운 색의 원반으로 스며들어 번져있다. 물론, 별의 색은 온도가 결정짓는다. 초점이 벗어난 전갈자리 대부분의 밝은 별들은 주로 푸른빛으로 보이는데, 이는 표면온도가 태양보다 훨씬 뜨겁다는 것을 의미한다. 태양보다 차갑고 큰, 사진에서는 붉게 보이는 별은 전갈의 심장에 위치한 거성 안타레스다. 오른쪽 위에 있는 희뿌연 원반을 망원경으로 초점을 맞춰서 보면, 태양빛을 반사하고 있는 고리를 두른 거대 가스 행성인 토성이라는 것을 바로 알아볼 수 있다.

Star Colors and Pinyon Pine

Explanation: Beautiful, luminous decorations on this pinyon pine tree are actually bright stars in the constellation Scorpius and the faint glow of the central Milky Way. Captured in June from the north rim of the Grand Canyon of planet Earth, the shallow, close focus image has rendered pine needles on the tree branch sharp, but blurred the distant stars, their light smeared into remarkably colorful disks. Of course, temperature determines the color of a star. Most of the out-of-focus bright stars of Scorpius show a predominately blue hue, their surface temperatures much hotter than the Sun's. Cooler and larger than the Sun, and noticably redder on the scene, is giant star Antares at the heart of the scorpion. In focused, telescopic views the whitish disk at the upper right would be immediately recognizable though, reflecting the Sun's light as ringed gas giant Saturn.
