위의 사진과 같은 배열은 “블루문일 때, 한번만(once in a blue moon)” 일어날까요? 꼭 그런 것은 아니지만, 블루문이 떠있는 동안에는 이 배열의 모습을 딱 한번 찍을 수 있습니다. 같은 달 내에서, 두 번째로 보름달이 뜨는 현상을 ‘블루문(blue moon)’이라고 합니다. 지난 1월말에 나란히 놓인 달과 나무의 구도를 구상한 사진작가는 배경으로는 달이 보이고 그 앞에는 달 크기에 딱 맞는 호(arc)의 모양을 가진 나무가 있는, 바로 이 지점을 재빨리 찾았습니다. 하지만 이때 불행하게도, 진흙에 빠지고 카메라를 철조망 울타리에 올려놓는 것 외에는 다른 방법이 없었습니다. 이 참나무의 호 모양은 이전에 미국 캘리포니아의 나이츠 페리(Knight’s Ferry)에 있는 굶주린 젖소들이 만든 것입니다. 이 기발한 달과 나무의 배열은 충분한 계획과 시간이 주어진다면 보름달이 뜬 어느 날에든 이런 모습을 담아낼 수 있습니다. 우연하게도, 그 다음 기회가 바로 이번 주말에 또 있을 예정입니다. 이번 주말, 2018년의 두 번째 블루문을 볼 수 있으며, 이는 올해에는 한 달에 두 개의 보름달을 볼 수 있는 또 다른 달(month)이 존재한다는 것을 의미합니다. 한 해 동안 두 번의 블루문이 있는 경우는 굉장히 드뭅니다. 이전에는 1999년에 그러했고, 이 다음은 2037년에 있을 예정입니다.

Explanation: Does an alignment like this occur only once in a blue moon? No, although it was during a blue moon that this single-shot image was taken. During a full moon that happened to be the second of the month -- the situation that defines a blue moon -- the photographer created the juxtaposition in late January by quickly moving around to find just the right spot to get the background Moon superposed behind the arc of a foreground tree. Unfortunately, in this case, there seemed no other way than getting bogged down in mud and resting the camera on a barbed-wire fence. The arc in the oak tree was previously created by hungry cows in Knight's Ferry, California, USA. Quirky Moon-tree juxtapositions like this can be created during any full moon though, given enough planning and time. Another opportunity will arise this weekend, coincidently during another blue moon. Then, the second blue moon in 2018 will occur, meaning that for the second month this year, two full moons will appear during a single month (moon-th). Double blue-moon years are relatively rare, with the last occurring in 1999, and the next in 2037.
